Climate news: Billions of people just felt the deadly intensity of climate-fueled heat waves

The Washington Post describes the scorching temperatures felt in the last week across five continents, breaking more than 1,000 temperature records. Showing how increasing greenhouse gas emissions have pushed the planet into new territory.

Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist, states that the planet could approach or surpass the highest global temperatures measured. Scientist originally predicted that summer temperature this year would be cooler than in 2023, which was the hottest summer in the Northern Hemisphere in the last 2,000 years, but now concerning signs point to more scorching conditions to come.

Global heat is expected to come after a historically strong El Niño pattern formed this winter but then dissipated, which was also seen in 2016 which was one of the hottest years observed in decades.
